Camera

Using a tablet camera can be both fun and valuable as a device to capture important points in one’s life. Camera phones started out as a novelty. Now, every single smart phone and tablet has a camera on it. Still pictures and video, the quality in some cases is better than real cameras. Many of the tablets have cameras on the front and the back. This makes it easier to video-conference with someone and you can see the screen as your camera also takes video of you. The camera on the backside of the tablet will be for you taking pictures/video and using the screen as a viewfinder.

The tablets with the best cameras as of the time of this article being written are the Asus Transformer Prime, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Blackberry Playbook.

The Transformer Prime has an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera.
The Blackberry Playbook has a 3 MP front-facing camera and a 5 MP back-facing camera.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 2 MP front-facing camera and 3 MP in the back.
The Motorola Xoom has 5 MP in the back and 2 MP in the front.

The Xoom and Galaxy have 720P video capture capability.
The Playbook and Prime are both capable of capturing video in 1080P.

Using a tablet as remote security is one way to get the most of the device. One can set up cameras outside of the house and access the cameras remotely. On a phone, this would be difficult as it is much too small. On the tablet, you have just the right size device to check the cameras. Since a tablet is always easy to turn on quickly, it works better than a laptop or desktop even when you are in the house.
IP Cam Viewer is one such app that lets you view you cameras remotely. This is a free app, which also has a paid version. Dropcam is another one that has an application, though paid.

Tablets can also alter the photos and video that you take right on the tablet. With the larger screen, this becomes easier than doing so on a phone or a camera. The tablet is not the most comfortable device to take the pictures or video, but it can be done. There is a Photoshop app that you can use to edit the photos. You could also access the Flickr and Picasa apps in order to share and tag your photos. Photobucket is another one that has an app that will allow you to easily snap the photo and then share it with your friends. Pinterest and Instagram are two of the latest sharing applications. There are so many new, exciting ways to make photos and videos a social experience.

Fring & Qik are two applications to look into in order to maximize your video capabilities on your tablet. When using a tablet for videoconferencing, Fring is an easy to use, free application that friends can utilize. You can videochat with anyone, and you can videoconference with up to three other people all for free. With Qik you can instantly put your videos online. There you can share them with your friends and family.

Calendar

Using a tablet computer can be just like having your own personal assistant. Instead of using your smartphone, which is really too small to be comfortable for long-term usage of this type, the tablet is just the right size for you to be able to carry around yet still view and adjust quite easily. Using a tablet for this purpose will help in your everyday life with bill alerts, but you could also use it at work to keep track of meetings and appointments.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples that will put this use for a tablet in clearer terms.
Take the Ultimate To-Do List app for example.
This will synchronize with your Google account, so it syncs with Google Tasks. It will support multiple accounts. You can organize your tasks into folders. You can set recurring tasks with complex schedules. You can set a time-based alert or a proximity alert. There are all sorts of customizable options to set this up as a handy calendar to remind you to do certain tasks.

Using a tablet with the Jorte widget installed will make life a lot easier for you. Jorte is a calendar where you can set tasks and leave memos for yourself. You can color code certain dates on the calendar according to the type of meeting, holiday, etc. You can synchronize this widget with Google calendar to instantly update when Google calendar is altered.

Using a tablet to sync with your Google calendar is an easy way to keep all of your appointments in one place. We have touched on this earlier, but it is really simple to do this with most of the calendar widgets and apps that you will be able to download for your tablet. Typically on Android tablets, once you sign in to the tablet with your Gmail account, the calendar should sync automatically. If on an iOS, such as the iPad2 device, you will have to enable Google Sync in order to synchronize your Google Calendar with your tablet device.

Some devices are better suited for using a tablet for purposes of keeping a calendar with to-do tasks.
These devices would be the ones with larger screens, best touchscreen responsiveness, sharper images on the screen and easiest interfaces. In our opinion, any tablet with work well with using a calendar, but the most effective tablets would be the Asus Transformer Prime, Blackberry Playbook, Apple iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab.
